How the bill calculator works
Every person's share is worked out from their own items, then tax and tip are added in proportion. Tax and tip are calculated on the subtotal, so the same multiplier applies to everyone:
share = items × (1 + tax rate + tip rate)
Worked example
A restaurant bill has a subtotal of 90, 8% tax and an 18% tip, so the multiplier is 1.26. Ana ordered 40 of food, Ben 30 and Cleo 20:
- Ana: 40 × 1.26 = 50.40
- Ben: 30 × 1.26 = 37.80
- Cleo: 20 × 1.26 = 25.20
The three shares add up to the grand total of 113.40.
Shared items and even splits
An item shared by several people (a pizza, a bottle of wine) is divided equally between them. Choose Split evenly to share everything that's left between the whole group.
Who pays whom
The calculator finds the smallest set of payments that settles everyone up. Mark a payment as Paid and the list updates; if someone paid a different amount, use Log another payment.
