How the tip split works

When you split the bill and the tip together, the cleanest method is a single multiplier that folds tax and tip into one number you apply to everyone's share.

Each person's total = their items × (1 + tax rate + tip rate)

So with 8% tax and a 20% tip, the multiplier is 1.28 — multiply each person's order by 1.28 and you've covered their food, their tax, and their tip in one step. The calculator above does this for you, then splits the result across the group so each person pays the tip on what they actually ordered, not an equal slice of someone else's steak.
